From A to Z, the entire process: What colors to choose, how to apply them, and how to keep them looking good.
If you’ve ever gone crazy coloring your hair in all kinds of different tints and colors, you’ve probably considered dying it purple at some point. This hue comes in a variety of gorgeous and fairytale tints that will go with a variety of complexion tones and looks.
However, if you become tired of all those color experiments and decide to go back to what Mother Nature gave you (i.e., your original hair color), then dying your hair purple may become your biggest worry.
How do you do it correctly, and are certain colors better for this purpose than others? This is what you’ll find out today!
How Can I Cover Up Purple Hair Dye?
Basically, such a coloring technique entails following a few standard stages.
First, you must raise and remove the purple color. If you don’t want to start with bleach right away, apply a dye remover and developer first, or opt for a clarifying shampoo and deep conditioning instead.
Use the bleaching product, warm water, and a 10 or 20 volume developer with shampoo if you decide to bleach. Work it all through your hair until the fantasy color is completely gone.
After the color has been removed, you must apply a new color to cover the prior hue.
However, things are not as simple as they appear when it comes to strange dye hues!
To begin with, if we want to answer the question of “how to dye over purple,” we must consider a number of things. First and foremost, it is your hair’s current state. If the chevelure has been dyed too many times, it could be completely destroyed by another dyeing operation.
You should also think about how you’ll get rid of the purple. If you decide to utilize a bleaching bath (assuming your hair condition permits), keep in mind that it will not simply color your hair pink. The trees will become porous and vulnerable to injury as a result of this process.
To cover the purple tint, you could use a demi-permanent hair color in some natural shades (for example, burgundy). Even so, your hair will be subjected to a significant chemical “assault.”
Finally, the quality of your hair dye is really important. If you dyed your chevelure purple with a mass-market hair dye, it may be difficult to convert it to a different color later because cheap dyes are difficult to remove. However, if you started with a high-quality dye, you can rest assured that the color change will be simple and painless for your locks.
How Do You Make Purple Hair Purple From Red?
Owners of red manes are immediately apparent, because this is not a hair color that can be overlooked! Even so, though, they might wish to do something even more odd and turn purple!
However, if you truly want to try out this mermaid fantasy hair color, you’ll probably have some questions, such as if you need to bleach your red hair to perp it for another color. For example, what shade of purple do you use on your red locks? No worries, we’ll walk you through everything step-by-step!
First, choose the right dye.
To avoid making a mistake, start by selecting the appropriate purple color. It’s good since purple (as you already know) is made up of red and blue, and you already have a red base.
If you have darker skin, a 4.9 violet or a deep purple 3.9 will enhance your complexion and draw attention to your eyes and lips. If your skin is fair, however, you can go with a lighter purple tint, such as 5.9 or 6.9, or a fantasy lilac dye. Your hair will have to be bleached anyway to get these colors!
Bleaching session
After you’ve decided on a dye and purchased it, you can move on to the bleaching stage. Remember, you’ll only need to go through this procedure if you’re going to use a strong violet or a light lilac dye color!
If this is your aim, mix your bleaching powder with 30 volume peroxide in a basin and use a brush to apply the mixture to your clothes. Start with the lengths because bleaching them takes the longest.
After that, leave the conditioner on your hair for thirty to forty minutes to work. But remember to check in every ten minutes or so to see how things are doing! If you do it this way, you will not miss the moment when your tresses become yellow.
Rinse the bleaching mixture with either your usual shampoo or the rinsing cream once it has occurred. You can now dry your mane before adding a fresh color.

Purple Colors to Consider
If you want to change your present fantasy purple hair color to something else, whether it’s something more natural or something even crazier, you might be thinking about what color will cover it.
And if you’re new to all of these coloring spheres, you can make a mistake and pick a tone that will most likely cause significant damage to your hair structure and appearance!
For your own safety, we suggest you first look at the following:
1. Bleach your hair first if you want to apply something light (for example, pastel pink, light blonde, etc.).
2. If you’re intending to use a darker hair dye, you’ll need to fade your present purple first.
3. If you want to use fancy colors, you can choose pink, blue, red, or violet.
4. If you’re looking for a more traditional look, go for chestnut or mahogany brown.
Blue, red, purple, chestnut, and mahogany brown are the most acceptable hair colors to apply on top of your current purple to cover it entirely and without flaws. Because they all contain blue or red pigments, these dyes are suitable for covering purple. You won’t even have to do any preparation work, such as bleaching your hair!
Please keep in mind that, even if you know what dye can cover purple, the color you get will depend on how dark your present purple is. So, assuming it hasn’t faded, you should expect your new hair color to differ slightly from the one on the dye box.
Purple Fading Tips
If you want to use one of the dye colors we described earlier, you must first fade your present purple. Fortunately, one of the approaches described below can be used to do this. So, you may decide which technique is best for you and implement it.
1. Use a ceramide-rich shampoo to fade your hair from soft to medium purple. This is the gentlest way to prevent harm to your hair.
2. You can use a simple dishwashing soap to fade medium purple or hair dyes that last up to twenty washes! However, because this liquid is incredibly caustic, expect your mane to become exceedingly dry. This is why you should always hydrate the ends with hair oil.
3. Finally, we recommend using baking soda to treat severe purple (or hair colors that last more than thirty washes). Simply add 100 grams to your shampoo and shampoo your purple mane!
Remember to hydrate your hair with coconut, almond, or flaxseed oil, as well as butter, before applying the new dye to keep it healthy. You will protect your hair from more and deeper damage by doing so.
How Should Purple Hair Be Cared For?
It’s a fantastic achievement to successfully color your mane purple. But that’s only half the battle! Now you must carefully care for your hair in order for the color to last as long as possible.
Purple, like any other fantastical and unnatural color, isn’t really a long-lasting dye. Even if you do everything right when it comes to prepping your hair for the coloring treatment and applying the dye, you shouldn’t expect it to last longer than three or four weeks!
This is why how you manage your purple strands is so crucial because it will determine how long they will please your eyes. Fortunately, the treatment is straightforward.
- Wash your purple hair less frequently (every two or three days), as shampoo will remove the color.
- Use a sulfate-free shampoo to keep the color.
- Make every effort to wash and rinse your mane in cool water to keep the color from fading.
- To protect the color on the ends of your hair, only wash the roots.
- Stay away from swimming pools! Chlorine in their water isn’t great for purple hair.
- Use hair masks and other treatments to keep your locks healthy.
- To give your locks a boost of color every time you wash them, mix a little hair color into your conditioner.
- When drying your hair or using any hot styling equipment, remember to use a heat-protection spray.
- Don’t forget about UV protection as well.
- After your hair has turned purple, consume hot oil hair treatments and oil-based hair masks for a period of time. As a result, the color will last longer.
With these simple tips, you’ll be able to keep your purple locks looking beautiful and well-cared for much longer.
So far, you’ve learned how to color your hair purple and what considerations you’ll need to make in order to complete the procedure properly. Also, now that you know the best dye colors to cover any shade of purple, you’ll have no issue picking the right one the next time you want to try something new with your appearance.
One of our customer Ksiepierski shared her views with Wrinky:
It will probably come out a burgundy kinda color. If you want it more red than burgundy, I would try a few fading treatments first. I agree though, I would use a pink based red and not an orange based, the orange may muddy up the blue tones in the purple.
Always clarify and demineralize your last cleansing before any chemical process to avoid adverse results or unstable chemical reactions! Remember that test strands can save you a world of headache, that protein damage is permanent, moisture is essential, you can use coconut oil as a lightener pretreatment to minimize protein reduction, and that Olaplex can reform broken disulfide bonds so long as they haven’t already negatively paired, but it does not address protein or moisture.
